Empowering Communities, Empowering Herself
Adiya Yerenova (BSc)
Adiya Yerenova is an HKU sophomore majoring in molecular biology and biotechnology. Born in London, Adiya’s life has taken her to different countries, shaping her into a person who is open to new opportunities and ways of life. Recalling her pre-teen times in Kyrgyzstan, she highlights the contrast between her patriarchal society that restricted women’s participation and the encouraging and multicultural environment she encountered in the United Kingdom. “I’ve realised that there are different ways of living, there are so many things I have yet to explore, the ways cultures and principles differ in different places. I’ve incorporated aspects of different cultures and values I’ve come across into my own life.” Having lived a nomadic lifestyle, she has come to appreciate different cultures and societal norms.
Adiya’s teenage years were marked by the absence of her father, leaving her and her mother to shoulder all the responsibilities of life. This experience, forced Adiya to mature quickly, assuming the role of a confidant to her mother and a role model to her younger brother. Despite facing adversity, her desire to excel soared, fuelled by her unyielding determination to succeed. Recognising the financial constraints of her family, Adiya studied rigorously and secured a scholarship that allowed her to study at HKU.
Throughout her life, Adiya has always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. This motivated her to start several NGOs, the NGOs tackled issues such as environmental sustainability, empowerment of underprivileged and marginalised communities and bridging educational gaps faced by low-income students in Kyrgyzstan. “I have dedicated the majority of my life to volunteering and contributing back to society. I believe as I gain personal empowerment, I would like to lift up others who are in the same position I was in.” Adiya recognises that true excellence lies not purely in academic success but also in utilising her skills and knowledge to help advance society.
Adiya discovered her true calling in the field of scientific and technological research. Her grandfather’s battle with cancer sparked her interest in the field of medicine. Her decision to pivot and pursue a career in the scientific field stemmed from her realisation that being a doctor would only limit her ability to provide palliative care to cancer patients with critical conditions. By choosing a career in science, she saw the opportunity to address the root cause of the disease and actively seek a cure. By delving into research, she would be able make a lasting impact and find a comprehensive cure to combat the disease.
In her university life, Adiya is deeply involved in extracurricular activities and very dedicated to her studies as well. “I remember an instance where I found myself working until 5 am. As someone who constantly strives to maintain a busy schedule, it’s not uncommon for fatigue to catch up to me and the thought of surrendering to sleep was very strong. However, a sudden realisation that I was actually in the exact place that I once yearned to be filled me with a renewed sense of energy and kept me going.”
Adiya strives to make the most out of her time at university, and looking to the future, she hopes to form an association that provides affordable medical treatment to people who can’t afford it.
