Can AI Transform the World?
Isaac Sze (BASc(AppliedAI))
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a hot topic these days and it has already proven its ability to transform the world and improve human lives. The ever-evolving field of AI touches so many aspects of life and its potential for growth seems limitless. Isaac is captivated by the unknown and infinite possibilities, leading him to pursue a course in AI and immerse himself in the field of AI research.
Isaac’s interest in robotics began in primary school, and he later learned coding, programming, and languages like Scratch and HTML. His passion for AI was ignited during his secondary school years when he taught himself the code Python during a school closure due to the pandemic. Since then, Isaac has been keenly interested in AI and recognised its vast potential in computing, ranging from automating tasks to applications in everyday life. “I like learning new things, and when I encounter any problems, I like to dive in to find solutions,” he said. Driven by his inquisitive nature and desire for knowledge, Isaac continuously explores these interests.
Isaac is excited to study AI operations, principles, machine learning, deep learning, and other technologies at HKU. He also plans to explore AI’s ethical and social applications. Isaac hopes to improve existing AI technologies like ChatGPT software and apply AI to fields such as robotics and smart cars. He envisions developing AI technology to a higher level for more extensive and accurate applications in everyday life.
As AI technology advances, it offers broader and more precise applications. However, its widespread use may raise personal privacy and data security concerns. After studying AI at HKU, Isaac hopes to gain a deeper understanding of the field and contribute to its advancements.
Isaac’s passion for AI is evident in his conversations. He believes that success involves studying his desired subject and continuing to research and pursue it further even after completing the course. He thinks AI technology is not only changing the world but also transforming his thinking and life perspective.
Finally, Isaac wants to share his experience with his younger classmates. “Initially, I had great doubts about whether I could be admitted to HKU via the School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme. After all, the competition is fierce, and there are many people with better qualifications than me. But in the end, I overcame my self-doubt and decided to give it a try.” He is grateful for the support from his teachers and the principal, and he encourages younger students to believe in their abilities and be brave enough to try. “Of course I can be nervous or anxious when I’m in unfamiliar environments or confronted with new challenges – it’s just natural. That’s when I rely what my teachers taught me: focus on adapting your mindset to the situation.” Isaac believes we have to be courageous and confident when facing obstacles and difficulties.
