Don’t Just Turn on the Light.
Be the Light.
Jonathan Frichot (BASc)
“Mauritius is a very multicultural society. We’re used to people of different religions and backgrounds,” says Jonathan, a 21-year-old HKU student, of his birthplace. He grew up in a diverse society shaped by generations of different cultures, which fostered in him an inclusive and empathetic nature. His Catholic faith played a significant role in shaping his character. He explains, “It’s really about forgiving and treating even those who you don’t like well.
Upon arriving at HKU, Jonathan encountered a new experience: feeling like an ethnic minority. However, his inclusive mindset and respect for cultural differences guided him through these initial challenges. Additionally, his academic journey took an unexpected turn when he pursued a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc) programme, with a second major in music and a minor in environmental science. Initially considering music as first major, doubts from people around him on the viability of a career in music made led him to his current curriculum. However, his deep passion for music eventually led him to also pursue it as a major, setting the stage for an eventual career in music composition. He also joined Astréas, an expressive arts organisation through which he discovered a second family, offering him a profound sense of belonging and support.
Jonathan’s personal growth has been remarkable. He has transformed himself from a timid individual into a confident leader, serving as the head of the dance department at Astréas. “I used to listen to people’s views instead of following my heart and fighting for my dreams,” he says, adding, “But now I realise that although it is good to listen to people’s opinions, I also know what I can do, and the choice is mine.”
For Jonathan, success is about finding joy in the process of creating music. Looking ahead, he aspires to become a music composer for movies and musicals, with a strong focus on evoking emotions through his compositions. In five years, Jonathan hopes to have completed further studies at the Berklee College of Music, en route to a flourishing career in music composition and creating projects that deeply resonate with his audience.
He envisions a world where people prioritise communication, understanding and respect over anger and greed. With empathy and kindness at his core, Jonathan is poised to make the world a more harmonious and melodious place through his compositions, inspiring others to follow their unique dreams. As he himself puts it, “Instead of turning the light on, be the light.”
