Dive in and No Regrets
Kenneth Cheung (MBBS)
Kenneth Cheung is one of the top scorers in this year’s HKDSE. He believes his outstanding performance in non-academic areas has also contributed to his successful direct admission to the first year of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at HKU through the School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme. Kenneth thinks that the most crucial aspect of studying is having the right mindset. Besides setting up a timetable for preparing for the HKDSE and handling the exams well, he encourages his peers to discover and develop their talents through extracurricular activities, seize more opportunities and avoid regrets. “Whatever the activity, how much you learn or gain depends on you. If you are fully engaged and proactive, you will be happier and learn more,” Kenneth said.
During his time in secondary school, Kenneth served as the Deputy Head Prefect, gaining valuable experience in team management. He believes these experiences will be beneficial for teamwork in both university and the workplace. Participating in extracurricular programmes such as Auxiliary Medical Service further solidified his determination and confidence in becoming a doctor. As an Orbis Student Ambassador, he organized fundraising events at school and collaborated with the Ebenezer School & Home for the Visually Impaired to host a concert for the visually impaired, allowing both himself and the public to experience the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals daily. “Through these activities, I developed my leadership and interpersonal communication skills, making me more proactive,” he says. After all, maintaining good communication with patients is vital for doctors.
By studying medicine, Kenneth hopes to contribute to public health in the future, such as educating the public on preventing diseases by improving daily habits. “I also hope to have the opportunity to join overseas exchange programmes or provide humanitarian assistance in impoverished areas, broadening my horizons and applying my experiences back in Hong Kong.”
When asked if he has ever considered making a positive impact on the world, Kenneth believes it’s crucial to take one step at a time. He aims to contribute to global issues like environmental protection and, after becoming a doctor, plans to make significant contributions to public health. As a freshman just beginning his university journey, Kenneth has a long road ahead. But with his engaged and proactive outlook, he’s already on a steady path to becoming an exceptional doctor, using his expertise to enhance society and promote human health.
