Transforming Lives One Smile at a Time
Lucy Lu (BDS)
Lucy’s journey is a remarkable fusion of diverse experiences that have shaped her into the passionate individual she is today. Born in Guangzhou, China, she first moved to New Zealand for high school and then came to Hong Kong to study dentistry. Reflecting on her experiences, Lucy emphasises, “These transitions opened my eyes to a world of diverse cultures and perspectives, molding me into an open-minded, globally aware individual.”
Her interest in the dental profession is driven by a deeply rooted belief in the transformative power of a confident smile. She recounts, “I’ve witnessed first-hand how dental treatments, such as braces, can profoundly impact individuals, boosting their self-esteem and changing their interactions with the world. It inspired me to pursue a dentistry career.” Her dream is to help people regain their confidence through dental care, improve their overall well-being and help them embrace life with courage and positivity.
Her education at HKU has been transformative, and now that she is in her final year of her dentistry studies, Lucy is on the verge of realising her dreams. The University’s dental programme, with its early clinical exposure and practical hands-on approach, coupled with the problem-based learning method, has provided Lucy with the skills and knowledge required to excel in her field. With a focus on building trust and rapport with her patients, she seeks to create an environment where they feel comfortable and understood.
Sports are another source of inspiration. Lucy is a former New Zealand National Table Tennis Team member and her dedication to the sport mirrors her commitment to her career. “Table tennis has instilled in me discipline, focus, and determination,” she notes, qualities that will also serve her well in her profession and in life.
Lucy is determined to follow her heart and keep her happiness a priority. She firmly asserts, “As long as I’m happy, that’s what counts for success. I’m all about doing what brings me joy. It’s tough to force yourself into something just to please others. That isn’t success. I’d rather find my own groove in society, where I feel comfortable. Follow my heart. If things don’t work out, it’s ok. I’ll learn and do it differently next time.”
As she looks toward her future, Lucy’s plan includes working in Hong Kong as a dentist, inspired by her deep connection with the local culture and people, and her unwavering commitment to her dream of bringing confident smiles to her patients, improving their lives, and in turn, bringing happiness to herself as well.
