Diane is in her final year of studying biomedical science at HKU with a minor in genetics. Growing up on Lantau Island in Hong Kong, she had the privilege of living near the beach, surrounded by a supportive family. Her father’s outspoken nature and her mother’s kindness have been significant influences in her life. Diane remembers her early years as idyllic: intellectually curious but mostly enthusiastic about sports. Diane’s parents never imposed their dreams on her but nevertheless shaped her values through their example.

Admitted to HKU through the Sports Scholarship Scheme, her athletic prowess shone brightly during the 2019-2020 Tsuen Wan and Islands District Secondary Schools Inter-school Athletic Competition, where she not only broke records but displayed tenacity by competing despite injuries. Diane’s achievements on the track, including breaking records and clinching gold and bronze medals, underscore her determination. This trajectory changed when she entered university. Amidst the rigours of relentless training and the challenges posed by injuries, Diane opted for a path characterised by stability through academia. “When I transitioned from being an aspiring athlete to a budding scientist, I faced self-doubt and had to balance rigorous athletic training with academics,” Diane recalls. This experience taught her the importance of discipline, focus, and hard work.

Her passion for medicine was ignited through various opportunities, including internships at the American Diabetes Association and a research laboratory. These experiences not only broadened her horizons but also gave her a sense of purpose in pursuing a career in medicine. Diane’s exchange semester in Canada sparked a passion for genetics through the Personalized OncoGenomics Program. Curiosity led her to intern at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, write popular science articles on genetic defects, and pursue a minor in genetics and genomics. “That’s how I knew my goal was to make a meaningful impact on lives and advance personalised medicine,” she notes.

Despite her demanding schedule, Diane remains close to her family and values them deeply. “My family’s unwavering support means the world to me. I hope to repay their love and dedication by achieving financial independence and not burdening them with financial responsibilities,” she says.

Moving forward, Diane says, “I envision myself studying medicine at a reputable medical school, ideally specialising in paediatrics.” Her philosophy centres around kindness and the belief that humanity should be more compassionate, especially toward the environment and animals. Her experiences with wildlife conservation and the realisation that animals and nature lack a voice have made her more conscious of our shared responsibility to protect our planet.

Reflecting on her holistic approach to life, she says, “My definition of success transcends mere achievements; it revolves around having a growth mindset and the courage to pursue my goals. I value the process, the journey, the courage to strive, and the constant endeavour to improve as much as, if not more than, the end result.”
